Getting Around and About

Driving in , out and around Ashland is pretty easy. On the secondary roads you can get to Route 9 and the Mass Pike (I90) in about 10 minutes. You can travel south and east on Route 135 towards Sherborn and Medfield and points further south. Travel west from Route 9 and you are about 15 minutes from Route 495. Although it may appear on a map that Ashland is further away from Boston, it is really a pretty decent commute taking about 40-50 minutes. And you are only a few minutes away from the new train stop to Boston and the wonderful mega shopping offered along the Golden Mile of Route 9.

Transportation and Access
Ashland is situated in the Greater Boston Area, which has excellent rail, air, and highway facilities. State Route 128 and Interstate Route 495 divide the region into inner and outer zones, which are connected by numerous "spokes" providing direct access to the airport and areas in and around  Boston.

Major Highways
Principal highways are State Routes 126 and 135. The Massachusetts Turnpike, Interstate 90, is easily accessible in the neighboring town of Framingham is just a few minutes away.

Rail
Commuter rail service to Back Bay Station and South Station, Boston, is available from Ashland. 

Bus
Ashland is a member of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). LIFT offers hourly bus service between Ashland, Framingham and Hopkinton.

Other
The Worcester Municipal Airport, a Primary Commercial (PR) facility with scheduled passenger service, is easily accessible.

Education

Warren and Pittaway Elementary Schools, Mindess and Ashland Middle School and Ashland High School. Students also have the option of attending South Middlesex Regional Vocational and Keefe Tech.

      OVEREATERS ANONYMOUS. Overeaters Anonymous meets every Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Cecilia's family center, 54 Esty St. in Ashland. There are no fees or weigh-ins and all are welcome. For information call 508-875-0001.
      CONCERT SERIES; The Friends of the Ashland Library are sponsoring a free concert series for ages 2 to 6 featuring local musician Ed "The Music Man" Morgan. The concert dates are Saturday, Dec. 18, 10 to 11 a.m.; and Saturday, Jan. 15,10 to 11 a.m. at the Ashland Community Center, 162 West Union St. A contribution of $1 per person covers Community Center fees.       PASTA FIESTA: The Ashland VFW Post 2331 holds a Pasta Fiesta Thursdays,5:30 to 7 p.m. Enjoy all-you-can-eat pasta, meatballs, sauce, salad, garlic bread and cake for $5, kids under 12 $3. Take a chance on the raffle - three chances for $1 with different prizes every week.
      CHICKEN SHOOT. The Greater Ashland Lions chicken shoots will be held at the Corner Pub, Rte. 135 in Ashland, from 1 to 3 p.m. on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. Proceeds go to eye research and community projects. For information call 508-881-6091 or 508-875-4513.
      FREE WOMEN'S HEALTH SERVICES. The VNA, joining the campaign to "Cover the Uninsured," is offering free mammograms, pap tests and cardiovascular screening to uninsured, income eligible women 40-64 at participating doctors' offices, clinics and hospitals. Call 888-663-3688, Ext. 5556 for details in English, Portuguese or Spanish.
      JOIN THE CHORUS. The Wayside Chorus is looking for women who love to sing. Open rehearsals are held every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Friedman Hall, Temple Beth Am, 300 Pleasant St., Framingham.       SHARE YOUR SIGHT. Did you know that your eyesight can be as valuable to others as it is for you? VISION Community Services, at the Massachusetts Association for the Blind, needs volunteers to read or shop with a blind neighbor, to help that person maintain independence. Two or three hours per week and a desire to help is all you need; hours are flexible. We'll provide the training and support. Opportunities are available throughout most of Massachusetts.       BINGO The South Middlesex Association for Retarded Citizens holds BINGO every Wednesday night at 60 Pleasant St. in Ashland. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and bingo starts at 7 p.m. Two $500 winner-take-all and 34 games featured. A caterer is on the premises; free coffee and donuts.
      LA LECHE LEAGUE. La Leche League of Ashland/Holliston/Hopkinton meets every third Wednesday of the month at 8 p.m. at the Golden Pond Resident Care Facility; all interested women are welcome. Babies are always welcome at the meetings.
      VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. The South Middlesex Association for Retarded Citizens is looking for volunteers to spend one night a month helping at its BINGO at 250 Eliot St., Ashland. Help is needed on any Wednesday night from 7 to 10 p.m. No experience necessary. Volunteers must be 18 or older. For information call 508-879-0487.
      PARENT SUPPORT GROUPS. South Middlesex ARC Inc. (SMARC) is forming support groups for parents of children who have developmental disabilities. SMARC's goal is to provide advocacy and support for developmentally disabled individuals, their families and their professional service providers. For information call 508-881-6494, Ext. 538.
      MARKET COUPONS FOR SENIORS. Ashland senior citizens (anyone over 60 years of age) on a limited income may come to the Elder Service Office in Town Hall to pick up Farmers' Market coupons. These coupons are for fresh fruits and vegetables found at various farmer's markets. If you are on SSI, or receive assistance in housing, food purchases, energy assistance or Medicaid, these coupons are for you. Signatures are required, so each recipient must come into the office for the coupons.
      DISCOUNT TICKETS. There are a variety of entertainment parks which offer discounted tickets for Ashland residents including Hoyt's Theaters tickets, available at $6 for the whole family.
      ARE YOU OK? The Ashland Police Department, with grant funding provided by the Executive Office of Public Safety, now offers a Community Policing program that will automatically check on the well-being of any Ashland resident who subscribes to this no-cost service. Applications may be picked up at the police station or by calling the COA, at 508-881-0140.
      SENIOR CALENDAR. Ashland's seniors can partake in activities at the Community Center. Every Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. will be senior time. Play cards, games, chat, play pool, etc. Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m. the card group meets at the Community Center. Try your hand.
     
Hopkinton Events

      SATURDAY MORNING STORIES. Saturday morning stories will be held in the Children's Room at the Hopkinton Public Library 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Volunteers will read stories and provide a craft activity. All ages are welcome with parent and no registration is necessary. For information and to volunteer call 508-497-9779.
      GUITAR LESSONS. The Cultural Arts Alliance is sponsoring guitar lessons taught by Christopher Carter. If you play the guitar or want to brush up on your technique, call Chris for lessons at the CAA, 98 Hayden Rowe St., Hopkinton, 508-435-9222 or 508-376-8375.
      CONTAINERS NEEDED. The Hopkinton Senior Center is in need of 2-cup containers with lids for homemade soups to be distributed to the seniors. The Council on Aging has volunteers willing to make soups for other seniors in need of a nutritional boost. The plastic containers are needed to freeze and deliver individual portions.       CAREGIVERS SUPPORT. The Visiting Nurse Association of Greater Milford-Northbridge Area meets Tuesdays, 1:30-3 p.m. at the Mendon Senior Center, Providence Road (new location). For information call the VNA at 508-473-0862 or 800-473-0862.
      SENIORS IN MOTION. Senior citizens and physically challenged persons can continue to live at home and remain independent with the help of the Seniors in Motion program. Motorized and manual wheelchairs, scooters and other mobility equipment is available at no cost to the patient. For information call 800-594-1225 for an in-home evaluation.
      JEWISH WORKSHOP. Registration for the Jewish Family Workshop IV is now taking place. The workshop is a collaborative of approximately 65 families joined to educate their children in Jewish/Hebrew studies. Sunday classes for ages preschool through grade 7 begin in September; call 508-935-0421.
      PASSPORT APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED. Hopkinton's Town Clerk's office will accept passport applications Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Applications may be obtained at the office, first floor, Town Hall, 18 Main St.. Call 508-497-9710.
      WISE WOMAN PROGRAM. VNA Care Network's Wise Woman program provides free physical exams, pap tests and mammograms to income-eligible women 40 and older (under 40 if qualified) with limited or no health insurance. For information call Wise Woman client service representative Ana Ferdaus at 888-663-3688, Ext. 5556 for the Dedham area, including Ashland, Dover, Framingham, Natick, Wayland, Wellesley and Weston.
      JAYCEES SEEKS MEMBERS. The MetroWest Jaycees, a group of men and women between 20 and 40 who organize community service projects, are looking for members. Dues are $20 per year, and the group provides an opportunity to contribute to the communities in which its members live and work.       FITNESS SEMINAR. "Awareness Through Movement, The Feldenkrais Method," is an eight-class program presented at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Holliston on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. The class teaches participants how to improve flexibility, well-being and more through gentle body movements. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a mat. Cost is $96. Pre-register by calling Jane Douglas at 508-429-1288.
      VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. Elders in the community need volunteers to read a book, write a letter or just sit and chat. If you can offer a few hours of your time call the Volunteer Director at Kathleen Daniel Rehabilitation Center on Franklin Street in Framingham at 508-872-8801.
