In May 2002 students in Massachusetts public schools took the MCAS tests. MCAS measures the performance of students, schools, and districts on the academic learning standards contained in the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Caliper Corporation has developed this web application to help Massachusetts residents better understand and visualize the MCAS test result data released by the Massachusetts Department of Education in September of 2002. By choosing various maps from the drop-down list, you can compare scores within the same grade level and subject area (which is how state education officials say scores should be compared). Maps and results are included for every test for which results were released. Just click on the link above.
Education officials broke down scaled scores on the MCAS into one of four levels: advanced (260-280), proficient (240-259), needs improvement (220-239), and failing/warning (200-219). When you zoom in on a city/town in a district map, you will see a chart showing the distribution of scores within the district for a subject. You can also use the Info tool on their web site to see the percentage of students falling within each level within the district for the current year. Similarly, you can use the Info tool on the school maps to see the percentage of students falling within each level within the chosen school .
